PHILIP BURNHAM HICKEN
1910 – 1985
A painter, educator and screen printer who preferred acrylics for his paintings, Philip Hicken was a teacher at the following institutions: Cummington School, 1940; Harvard University Graduate School of Design, 1950-53; Boston University, 1956-57; and from 1957, Chairman of the Fine Arts Department at the Boston Art Institute. He lived at Watertown, Massachusetts.
He was a member of the National Serigraph Society; American Artists Congress; Art Union of Western MA; Boston Society Watercolor Painters; Boston Print makers; Cambridge Art Association; Royal Society Art; and Nantucket Art Association.
Exhibition venues included the National Serigraph Society, 1940-46; Library of Congress, 1944, 1946; National Gallery of Art, 1945; Mint Museum Art, 1946; Boston Arts Festival, MA. 1954; National Academy, Rome, Italy, 1954; and Copley Galleries, 1969.
