Description
A 1963 limited edition book of “Drawings For Dante`s Inferno By Rico Lebrun.” This is one of an edition of only 2000 copies and includes the four original lithographs signed in plate and dated ‘63. The book was designed by Leonard Baskin, set in etching Monotype Bembo at The Steinhour Press and printed by the Meriden Gravure Company. The book was published by the Kathos Press. There are 36 large plate illustrations bound in the book and it comes with the original slipcover. The slipcover has corner tears as shown in pictures. One of the loose sheets has a stain on a border also seen in the pictures. The book and lithographs are in excellent condition. The four separate prints are printed on off white one side heavy art card stock paper. Book comes with the original outer box. This is from the Original Printing in Lithography. Rico Lebrun (1900 – 1964)
Painter, muralist and sculptor Rico Lebrun was born in Naples, Italy in 1900. He died in Malibu, California in 1964. He is known for strong figurative images, frequently in black and white. In 1954, he began work on his Buchenwald series, an exploration of the horrors of World War II. His Crucifixion Series (as a metaphor) was the basis of a retropective exhibit in Los Angeles in 1967. His work has been exhibited by and is in the collections of numerous museums throughtout the U.S., South America and Europe. Major exhibits of his work were held in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 1945, 1948, 1951 (prize) and the famous retrospective in 1967. Other exhibits include Venice Biennal, 1950; Whitney Museum of American Art, 1938-63, Art Gallery of Toronto (solo), 1949, Philadelphia Academy of Fine Art, 1945, 1951-53 (gold medal); among many others.
